ACC Adopts
Precision Time System
Official's whistle
will instantly stop clock in basketball games.
June 1, 1999 GREENSBORO, N.C.
During
recent Conference meetings, the ACC voted to adopt the use of the Precision
Time System for all of its basketball games beginning with the 1999-2000
season. The system, which uses the official's whistle to stop the clock
instantly, was tested at Duke, NC State and North Carolina in conference games
last year, and also was used in both men's and women's conference basketball
tournaments.
"We experimented with the Precision Time System
during the 1998-99 basketball season and the system performed
flawlessly.
There were no controversial timing situations in any game
in which it was used," said Associate Commissioner Fred Barakat. "It gives both
our coaches and officials extreme confidence that the game can be played
without timing problems, especially at the end of the game. This system will be
a huge enhancement to our game and I would recommended its use at all levels of
competitive basketball."
